Nine Mosquito myths

1. Lemon dish soap and Listerine repel mosquitoes

Fiction: This myth has been widely circulated around the Internet. According to the Florida Medical Entomology Lab at the University of Florida, these household products do not work to thwart mosquitoes. One of the most effective repellents is DEET. The Centers for Disease Control also recommends repellents with Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus.

If you use a product containing DEET, read the label and do not over-apply. DEET is a powerful chemical that can be harmful if used incorrectly. Make sure the repellent has an EPA-approved label and registration number. Use caution with small children and stick with a formulation that is made for kids.

2. Ultrasonic devices repel mosquitoes

Fiction: Save your money. According to the Department of Entomology at Purdue, these gadgets don't work. Bug zappers do kill mosquitoes, but they also electrocute many beneficial insects including those that eat mosquitoes, so the scientists at Purdue recommend against using them.

3. Taking B vitamins repels mosquitoes

Maybe: According to the Mayo Clinic, B vitamins change a person's odor, which may indeed make them less attractive to mosquitoes.

4. Eating garlic repels mosquitoes

Fiction: According to current research, consuming large amounts of garlic only works against vampires and bad dates.

5. Skin-So-Soft products repel mosquitoes

Fact: BUT, buyer beware: According to a study by the University of Florida, Skin-So-Soft and other products containing Citronella oil are only effective for between 3 and 10 minutes after application.

6. Creating a bat or insect-eating bird habitat will rid your yard of mosquitoes

Fiction: While these species do eat mosquitoes, they probably won't eat enough to make a noticeable difference at your next garden party.

7. Meat tenderizer calms an itchy bite

Fact: The Mayo Clinic recommends mixing a tablespoon of water with a tablespoon of meat tenderizer and forming a paste to apply to a bite. Using an ice pack can ease discomfort as well. OTC remedies to try: hydrocortisone cream and calamine lotion.

8. Mosquitoes die after feeding

Fiction: Unfortunately, the female mosquito (males don't eat blood, they feed on nectar) can live to bite again. Females will die if they don't get their first blood meal, which they require in order to lay eggs.

9. Mosquitoes transmit the HIV virus

Fiction: According to scientists at the Centers for Disease Control, Rutgers University, and others, mosquitoes cannot transmit the HIV virus from human to human. They do carry the West Nile virus and other serious diseases.

Nearly one million people die each year from malaria, mainly children under the age of 5. You can help eradicate this preventable disease.

A dog's bite

A neighbour of mine got bitten by her own dog 4 days ago.
She was an old lady, around 60+ and still living strong.
It was one of those causal nights where she had taken her dinner and later laid on the sofa while watching tv.
Then her dog came into the house, and jumped unto her with joy,
but all of a sudden, the dog took a huge bite on her palm, and wouldn't let go
She screamed and her husband saved her by hitting the dog away,
Later, she was immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment and the veterinarian was called in to give the dog a shot for a peaceful death.

I visited my neighbour at the women's ward yesterday afternoon,
and it has already been a week since she's there, her wounds has not fully recovered yet,
Therefore, she was required to have a longer stay.

This incident reminds me of two precautions:
1) A dog that bites their master or mistress out of anonymity more than twice should be put to sleep.
2) However, do not immediately put the dog to sleep once it has bitten you, keep it under observation for 10 days, and observe any excessive salivation that the dog is suffering, it might be infected with rabies ( it could have been bitten by nomadic bats). If it does, inform these details to the health administrator at the hospital, any further delays are fatal.

Falling slowly - Kris Allen Lyrics

A soothing melody :)
田馥甄音樂會-8.Trouble
The pursuit of happiness

Take a break from all that pressure life gives and watch this movie that I am recommending here.
This movie is touching to its very end and it makes one more appreciative of what they have now.
the film is based on the true-life rags-to-riches tale of Chris Gardner, who went from being a marginally employed salesman to a wealthy investment banker. The movie follows Gardner and his five-year-old son as they are evicted from their San Francisco apartment, and with nowhere to go they take to sleeping in subway stations, homeless shelters, and bathing in public restrooms. Quite by chance Gardner becomes an intern at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, and while trying to survive with his son, struggles to make his dreams of a better life for the both of them come true.

A very motivational movie, one that could melt your heart, and give thanks for being able to live.

Tau sa twist buns and curry chicken pizza buns
I made these two nights ago,
Red bean twist buns. this is my second attempt on buns. the first one was roughly three year back (sausage buns) which needed ordinary wheat flour instead of high protein flour.

exhibit A : before getting it heat bathed in the oven..hahas

Earlier, I mistakenly thought I had to actually twist and pull the dough with force, the illustrations gave me that thought..lol.. so,my first and second try was really bad.It almost looks like bullshit.but it doesnt right after I glazed the bull-shit looking dough with beaten egg
.but the bullshit-looking dough came out different and edible after it was heat bathed for 20 mins under 190c hahahah!

kungfu twist!

below looks like a cookie.chocolate chips and butter cookies :3
ready to serveAnd today, I made these..
Curry chicken pizza bun

prepare the dough, which has a relatively similar measurement with red bean buns, just slightly more high protein flour and less milk.
These Buns were surprisingly easy to bake compare to cakes. But I really need to look after the temperature well as I'm using a stove oven. The base was a little darker in brown. but overall,it was enjoyable :)
